METANlab

The first laboratory for biogas in Italy

METANlab

The BTS Biogas Biogas laboratory in Porto Mantovano is unique in Italy. Here, samples are analyzed and measured values are determined in order to ensure the durable, safe and profitable operation of the biogas plants.
We collect empirical data according to scientific methods that describe and optimize production process and the biogas yield under different conditions.
Through this research work, we can continue to improve planning and development as well as the operation of the biogas plants.

  • The search for metabolic products such as volatile fatty acids (e.g. acetic acid, propionic acid, butyric acid, ...), whose accumulation represents a disturbance of the microbiologic process in the biogas plant;
  • Determination of the dry matter and the organic dry matter, whose factors for evaluating the consistency of the digestibility of the feed in the biogas plant are significant;
  • Determination of ammonium and ammonia for discovering a potential inhibition of the microbiological process;
  • Determination of the available nutrients in the digestate;
  • Determination of the biogas yield for a product using the batch process.

Description:
The SpectraStar 2400 RTW is the latest generation of NIR spectrometers (NIR stands for Nearly Infrared). Using infrared rays, it carries out fast and precise analyses of the chemical and physical properties of silage and hay. When doing so, the measurement results are used for the quantitative determination of organic ingredients and ingredient groups.

Function:
The sample is irradiated in the NIR spectrometer in the wavelength range from 1,200 to 2,400nm and the reflected radiation component is measured depending on the wavelength. This allows precise results to be determined for main components such as fat, protein, moisture, starch, fibers, carbohydrates, amino acids and sugars. The NIR range over 1,800nm makes even more sensitive analysis possible for measuring sugars, amino acids, fatty acids, starch, fibers and other components in low concentrations.

Therefore, the intensity of the reflected light from the NIR spectrometer can lead to conclusions concerning the quantity of these ingredients.
